![]() Use BMW or European coolant only - not the green stuff. Do it over fill, as that will cause the tank to burst. If it doesn’t, add coolant a little at a time until the stick starts to rise. ![]() For the short term, the correct way to check your coolant level is with the engine COLD, parked on level ground. if you plan to keep this car for a while and wrench on it yourself, buy a Bentley manual (the publisher, not the car brand). If you can’t find the answer in the manual, then go to sites like e46fanatics and Bimmerfest. Honestly asking a bunch of strangers on the internet for info that’s at your fingertips doesn’t make sense. ![]() I know we now live in a era where devices like computers and cell phones don’t come with user manuals, but reading and getting familiar with your car’s manual should be a priority. Not every car basically requires you to have an expansion tank, gallon of premixed coolant, power-steering fluid, extra coils, a quart of oil, and some tools in the trunk just in case.ĭon’t rely on Facebook and reddit to fix your car, don’t overthink it, empower yourself with the two plus decades of knowledge and experience the internet has just sitting there waiting for you. Go onto youtube and search “common e46 problems and fixes”. There are few, if any, problems that nobody has ever had before. Unless you have a shitload of money, or already have existing experience, use the 20+ years of knowledge that’s already out there to help you navigate your ownership. The newest this car can be is 18 years old, so your first car is a nearly 20 year old German luxury platform that has its share of unique problems and quirks. eventually enough coolant is pumped at the restriction (increasing pressure) that the level seen at the sensor drops, once the engine roll comes off the line opens a bit and lets the coolant flow? Of course during coast down the engine roll would be in the opposite direction so not sure why the coast down part happened. Here’s a tip, and I’m not trying to be a dick: Is it possible with engine roll (which is for-aft right) some line is getting pinched. Where is the low coolant sensor in this system. A leak may also show up as steam when the engine is hot and running. Coolant leaks usually appear as wet areas (darkened or rust-colored) around the engine compartment, or the ground under the engine. This behavior has been very consistent so I don't think it is a bad sensor.Ī few things I don't know. A low coolant level light may also be a symptom of a system leak. When I got to work the parking lot was to dark to see what level the coolant was at in the overflow bottle. Back into drive no light about 3 to 5 minutes later light came on as I was exiting the freeway - coasting rpms were low below 1500 I shifted to N (little to no change in RPM) light immediately went off. Once the light came on I again put in neutral but kept the RPM's up light stayed on. Put back in drive and it took another 3 to 5 minutes for the light to come back on. So today on the way to work, when the light came on I shifted to neutral. Check for leaks: If the coolant level is consistently low or the low coolant light comes on frequently, it may indicate a leak in the cooling system. This time oddly after I refilled the overflow the light still is coming on at highway driving. The problem is back, and I am thinking the UIM was fine. ![]() ![]() I was getting a low coolant light after driving on the highway for 5 min or so. Saw a similar thread topic to this but it seems to have gotten a bit off focus.Ībout 18 months ago I had the UIM replaced on my 2002 GP 3.8l Naturally Aspirated v6. ![]()
